A new angle on spin ?
Originally from: frances fish We all know this governments' reputation for spin, for attempting to make things appear better than they are but this really made me smile. Apparently Tony Blair has spent nearly £1,800 of taxpayers money on make-up and make-up artists ! £1,000 of this went on make-up alone !!! Girls, how much a year do you spend ? |

RE: Is a smallholding worthwhile
Originally from: frances fish Hi, I always think that doing what you really want to do, that is start up a smallholding is worthwhile. If, however, you are not willing to deal with the bureaucrats at Defra, then you should not consider it. For you will find that almost all that you would want to do, from keeping animals to selling eggs and disposing of your manure will be governed by them. |

RE: New TSE Regulations
Originally from: frances fish Not to forget that this will also apply to scrapie in sheep, chronic wasting disease in deer, etc. It is a blanket not just a response to the bovine situation. The wording is TSE not BSE, probably deliberate. The National Scrapie non-Plan is stumbling along, always moving the goalposts, obviously not getting on top of the perceived problem and, above ALL else, is costing too much. |

RE :Fear of the Internet
Originally from: frances fish I am all in favour of healthy debate, it is stimulating and often informative. When it descends into the personal I think it should be halted because there is no need for personal insults. It is said that when that is resorted to, whoever does it is losing the argument and they know it ! Its a lot like a red herring, to divert from the actual argument. |

Swallows and Summer
Originally from: frances fish The swallows are back ! Yesterday I found two twittering in the barn, first thing when I was checking for lambs. One swallow does not make a summer, but two ?We have had some quite glorious weather up here recently so we are on our way. Frances — Whatever you Wanadoo: http://www.wanadoo.co. |

RE; Britsish Cattle Movement system
Originally from: frances fish Hi again George, you are evading the question. Would YOU use the phone to register a calf with the BCMS, polite or not ? P.S. You are so keen to defend them are you on a percentage perhaps ? It is refreshing to eventually meet someone who has a good word to say about them, though, I'm sure they would appreciate it if they knew. Frances ,in the real world without the rose coloured specs ! |

RE: British Cattle Movement
Originally from: frances fish Hi George, Would you, personally, use this way of attempting (and I use this word deliberately ) to record with the BCMS ? There are more than enough problems, as Mark has demonstrated without it being your word (on the phone) against theirs !! Come on, get real, whose head is in the silica now ? |

RE: British cattle movement........
Originally from: frances fish Dear Ron, and so say all of us. The BCMS is a truly miraculous body, it actually can perform miracles, apparently. It certainly has brought more than one of our deceased bovine herd back to life, it has it on their statistics and, of course, unlike farmers, they NEVER make errors. |

RE: This is a statement.................
Originally from: frances fish Hi Hilary, If we all thought that, nothing would ever change, certainly not for the better ! If we were to give up hope and "let it all happen ", there would be no debate. Why do you think that many consider a hung parliament a good option ? Because no one person or party would have so much power that they abuse it and would be forced to listen to other views, whatever their own "programme". |

RE: Censorship
Originally from: frances fish To vaccinate with the MMR you challenge the body (in the usual case, very young bodies) 3 times as much as if you vaccinated against a single disease at intervals. It is quite a lot for youngsters to have to cope with. No wonder many feel(and act) "off" for days afterwards. I can only assume that the reason, apart from bloody-mindedness, is the usual cost. Is it cheaper to use a triple rather than individual injections ? |

Censorship
Originally from: frances fish A step further than spin is true censorship, not just putting the best gloss on a situation but supressing certain key(and important) facts. There has been some reports of new research into the MMR, 3in 1 jag for infant immunisation against certain childhood diseases. The uptake of the MMR has fallen due to an alleged connection with increasing levels of autism. |

Defra Debt
Originally from: frances fish Hi Richard, What you are saying is also what we have been saying. The money has run out and everyone is suffering. Education, the NHS, everything is affected. I dread to think what the war (peace ???) in Iraq is costing every single day. Defra made a commitment to contractors in 2001, at the time, it was do whatever it takes and they would foot (if you'll forgive the unintended pun ?) the bill. |

Killing of dog
Originally from: frances fish Hi Coleen and Jane, Every abattoir has a vet in attendance now, its part of the increased costs. It is possible that the dog was either shot (unlikely) or injected (possible) or even stunned and…............as you say, Coleen, there is no accounting for people and they do the strangest things.I would have thought that the biosecurity aspect was extremely iffy though and for that alone, it would be worth following up. |

The mad woman........
Originally from: frances fish Does this woman really think she is an expert in everything ? If she thinks some shepherds in this country are callous and bad, then what of Austalia and New Zealand ? I believe that much of the husbandry over in the Antipodes works on the principle of survival of the fittest and what is euphamistically referred to as "minimal intervention". |

Mary and Warmwell
Originally from: frances fish Dear, Dear Mary, where would we be without you ? I read your site at 6–30 in the morning and again in the evening, in case you posted something new that I should know about straight away ! How will we get independant reports of what's going on ? Who will hold us together ? |

Teabags and lunacy
Originally from: frances fish How can a teabag, made of paper round a plant product, namely dried tea leaves, BE an animal by-product ? Answer is, it can't. This is of the "What sex is your bull?" variety, surely ? Has April come early this year or is the moon shining particularly brightly in Wales ?Is it mandatory to have a certificate to prove you are loony before getting a job where you interprate Brussels directives into lunatic statements? |

Democracy ?
Originally from: frances fish 2 stories here, recently posted with an alarming similarity to me. One says that after the usual lip service to "consultation", Mrs Beckett is to press ahead with GM crops and technology (despite Public opinon being firmly against this whatever their own spin says to the contrary). She is to disband the very body set up to monitor events and provide guidance. So, no safeguards, no compensation ,no choice, no voice ? |

TB and rapid testing
Originally from: frances fish Hi Bill, Happy New Year, and thanks for the info. Do you know anything of a test called V-Scan, marketed by the Chinese I believe and said to be much more accurate and only to detect active disease ? There has to be something better out there than to kill rather than detect ?Am I howling at the moon, do you think ? If there really was a better option, would the powers that be, be interested.? |
