RE: Asian pigs which don''''''''''''''''t fly
Originally from: Pat Gardiner There were very strict regulations in respect of the import of domestic pets to prevent rabies. This enjoyed the respect and assistance of everyone. Many times, to my certain knowledge, suspected breaches of regulations on cargo vessels were reported to the authorities by ordinary dock workers. |

Corporate Multi-national Factory Hog Farming in USA
Originally from: Burkie Dear Friends: This is a very graphic website I discovered last night. Apparently, PMWS is rampant in the U.K. and Europe (not in Sweden, yet), resulting in death losses of over 20% in affected herds. Many of these affected facilities have also been operated by multi-nationals, much like Seaboard's operations in the USA. In reviewing The Pigsite's forum, which has pages of comments about PDNS, PRRS, and PMWS…. |

RE: Smithfield wins bid for Farmland Industries Pork Division
Originally from: Farmtalking Thanks Gary! I've read your message and the article/interview with Luter of Smithfield; both very interesting. However, I have a few observations to make. Like so many others, I had taken little interest in where or how our food was produced until the FMD outbreak of 2001. This in spite of the fact that members of my own family were farmers and for most of my life I've lived in the countryside, on or near farms. |

Re: Most world markets remain shut to British breeders
Originally from: Farmtalking Why not? I've found MP's do usually answer letters although in 2002 it took them a few months to do so sometimes! As you know, I don't think they intend to vaccinate and then slaughter so I've not asked the specific question but I'm not afraid to do so and perhaps I will! No farmer would entertain it would they? |

Re: Most world markets remain shut to British breeders
Originally from: Farmtalking Lina is right – vaccination will halt disease spread (see Uruguay 2001!) but slaughter afterwards? I don't think so! Remember the uproar created when they did that in Holland? The vets all said they would not be party to that again and the people and farmers demonstrated against it in horror. Holland had agreed it would never happen again in their country. Why did they do it? To regain their FMD Free Status quickly. |

Re: FMD
Originally from: Val Collinson Andrew You say that in the not so distant past, farmers had a lot of influence. I think that the simple reason for this was that many politicians were also farmers! Maybe 'digging for Britain' also had a little to do with it at one time. |

Re: FMD
Originally from: Pat Gardiner I can reply to this from direct personal experience and can back these allegations with documentary proof. Prior to retiring I was a shipbroker On the late afternoon of 20 March 2001 I relieved a phone call from Sky TV who asked for expert assistance with a story about FMD. |

Re: Apologies and an explanation!
Originally from: Farmtalking Of course it must mean vaccinate to live! Why on earth would it not? When we know the vaccine we have at present – Works! Protects for 6 to 12 months Would stop disease spread Our Govt and the EU has said it will be a 1st choice! So as far as I can see that's all great news and it seems we will never have to endure the massive slaughters ever again. |

Re: Six children diagnosed with foot-and-mouth
Originally from: chris stockdale Bill, as part of my work on DEFRA's FMD Stakeholder Communications Group I keep pressing for the sort of bio-secure entry/exit portals for farms in the event of an FMD outbreak that Drs Sutmoller and Barteling were stating as essential if a non-vaccination policy is to be followed – like the entry/exit portals for mobile laboratories. |

A Christmas Tale
Originally from: Farmtalking The following sad tale comes from Elaine – I have just seen the most pitiful ewe. My husband had it tied up outside our workshop when the schoolchildren caught it this morning when they were waiting for their bus. It was severely underweight, dehydrated, hypothermic and extremely weak. The fleece was missing off its back and it was covered in deep frost. It was in an appalling state. |

fmd v terrorist attack same result deaths..
Originally from: Duncan I hope and I pray that we are never threatened with a 'terrorist attack'. For all the reasons that innocent lives would be lost – but also because this Government of ours could not manage a FMD outbreak. A relatively harmless 'virus' that if caught and handled correctly can be halted with very little distress to anyone (animals included). |
