Research into the use of a vaccine for badgers has been underway since 1999. It has now reached a stage where field trials are necessary for the next phase of the vaccine licensing procedure.

We should be able to export live cattle now, if the Portuguese can, their incidence of BSE being higher, and ours in the UK alledgely falling rapidly.The reason we can't is that we have not applied, as far as I can tell. Its an absolute disgrace.

The minister responsible for animal health, Ben Bradshaw, told BBC Radio 4's Farming Today This Week programme that farmers would be consulted on the issue soon.
