Discussion message warmwell

Originally from: Mary Critchley Is anyone here still reading warmwell? As many know, I have been updating it daily since the outbreak in 2001 – at really quite considerable expense in terms of time, money and health. Replies would help me to make a decision about whether it is of value to anyone other than myself and the few journalists who pick its brains (with no acknowledgement) from time to time.

Discussion message RE: TB again

Originally from: Farmtalking It may be that the tests used to detect various diseases are not always 100% accurate. That can be for many reasons and not necessarily the fault of the test itself or the vet administering it. All animals are different and just like humans react or are susceptible, differently.

Discussion message Scrapie again

Originally from: frances fish A "new" scheme(actually, of course, its not ) to enable those with the inclination to volunteer their stock, healthy apart from being what the government regards as scrapie-susceptible, for slaughter. You do not even have to have sheep with scrapie to join this elite band, help will be given for restocking afterwards with so-called scrapie resistant rams etc.

Discussion message RE: Brucellosis

Originally from: frances fish O/T has anyone else noticed that when something like Dring and this hit the news there are problems in communication on sites like this one ? E-mails are all over the place, usually delayed. O.K. jane, I know what you will say, there are blips occasionally, nothings perfect. But it doesn't happen at quiet times does it ? Co-incidence perhaps ?

Discussion message Re: FMD

Originally from: Val Collinson Andrew You say that in the not so distant past, farmers had a lot of influence. I think that the simple reason for this was that many politicians were also farmers! Maybe 'digging for Britain' also had a little to do with it at one time.

Discussion message Re: Re: Rabies. A Few Statistics.

Originally from: Bill Totally agree on vaccination Jane, must see if Bertie and Bob need a booster. I have a few statistics on rabies compiled by the Pasteur Institute as follows, Incubation. Very variable, shortest recorded incubation 7 days, more commonly incubation is two months, sometimes three months, and less often up to six months. The longest recorded incubation period was in a vaccinated person where incubation was twenty seven months.

Discussion message RE: Gill Claims Vaccination Victory

Originally from: David Hi Andrew, How are you coping with the latest milk price reductions? I don't know which is worse – last years FMD with high feed costs or a milk price reduction of almost 5p a litre. That will slash my non existent profit by £45,000 so I think that the bastards have finally got us. I don't know whether to set fire to all my silage tyres on the M5 or just finally throw the towel in quietly.

Discussion message RE: Gill Claims Vaccination Victory

Originally from: David I suppose from a business point of view, Ben Gill is right with the attitude of cull like hell, get the compensation and get back to normal. What would have happened to all the finished animals had they been vaccinated and no one would buy them??

Discussion message RE: marker vaccines

Originally from: David OK then Jane – now we have got to get the EU and the WORLD to agree to trade animals that have been vaccinated with marker vaccines! Fancy popping along to WTO?! – because we can't do this just in the UK. I wonder what the cost will be – but I guess it would be cheaper than another epidemic.

The most effective means of doing so is to slaughter and destroy infected or potentially infected animals.

Discussion message RE: NFU is still at it!

Originally from: David Hi Colleen, I guess this "experiment" of vaccinating (if it happens) will be restricted to start with. I also predict that the animals will be slaughtered and wasted afterwards until they come up with a quick, cheap test to determine whether an animal has been vaccinated or is carrying the FMD antibody. I agree that the supermarkets will "prefer" to buy unvaccinated meat.
