RE: TB again
Originally from: frances fish Dear Jane and Mona, Such are the tests for TB that it is little wonder that many have little faith in them. After 2001 when they slaughtered so many healthy animals would many people want to volunteer more on the basis of testing which is so unreliable ? As I say, if you wish to see the exact figures, they are posted on the Defra website and make quite alarming reading. |

"A future outbreak will be controlled by a cull"
Originally from: frances fish Just WHAT lessons have been learned ? If you have your head stuck in the sand then it must be very difficult to see any other point of view. In fact, you will be stuck in a time-warp where nothing changes and nothing gets any better. I think that Defra/Seerad epitomises this attitude for most farmers. |

Re: Avian flu
Originally from: coleen Hi Hilary, My theory is that the next big 'bang' will come from us. We will wipe ourselves out, through our greed and self preservation that we exploit regardless of who and what else suffers. I think that the scares we have seen, BSE, FMD, SARS, AVIAN FLU to name a few, are warnings that we cannot go on the way we are. |

Letter to America
Originally from: Pat Gardiner "Let's not start a health scare!" is a pretty reasonable statement, when huge industries shudder under the impact of Mad Cow. We can all understand and sympathise with the sentiments. But it is not reasonable in a capitalist society and can spark complete disaster. Britain's livestock sector has been shattered by four successive animal health epidemics, two carrying suggestions of human health risk. |

RE: Asian pigs which don''''''''''''''''t fly
Originally from: Pat Gardiner There were very strict regulations in respect of the import of domestic pets to prevent rabies. This enjoyed the respect and assistance of everyone. Many times, to my certain knowledge, suspected breaches of regulations on cargo vessels were reported to the authorities by ordinary dock workers. |

Re: FMD future - Some good news!
Originally from: Burkie Dear John: It's more tban "just politics." One person in your country has a hell of a lot to answer for….I could ask a hundred "Why Didn't He Do? questions…..Why didn't he stand up and say, "This culling has to stop!"....but that would have affected his own personal pocketbook….we had no idea the extent of influence this person has on your whole meat trade in the U.K and the world, for that matter. |

RE: The changing world of animal disease
Originally from: Burkie Dear Friends: Just sat down and looked back through old computer files…and oila'! found some old files I thought I had lost. One was an extracted time line of the FMD World-wide outbreaks from 1999, 2000, 2001, as reported by IAH-Pirbright to the OIE. Unfortunately, when I first made this little file up, it was alphabetized, by country…so I did a little computer tweaking…and what do you know…. |

Re: The changing world of animal disease
Originally from: Bill "Where do new diseases come from and how do they spread?" ???????????? They haven't got a bloody clue how the old diseases spread! Most diseases, whether it be the common cold or foot-and-mouth, spread by contagion, a word that does not appear to be in the Institute For Animal Health vocabulary. |
