Hi

Could someone please give me a link or some names to the companies that farm intensively i.e. massive air conditioned controlled sheds (with animals kept inside day and night) factory farming I think is the description I am looking for.

I have been challenged that this does not happen and cannot find the info that came to light during fmd. I know that one multi national company in Scotland was expanding... They were raising pigs in these purpose built vast units – even the food was computer controlled.

Thanks

Coleen

Hi Coleen

In Scotland, currently, I'm not sure.

Although this method of raising pigs is so normal that it hardly draws comment.

If you want the dirt on pigs and Scotland. – Google for Scotpigs – a massive operation. They actually had a PMWS epidemic, and went bust as a result.

The receiver then shipped the pigs south to England for slaughter. They were considered unsafe for human consumption in Scotland and were banned from slaughter there. The final destination of the meat is unknown.

The press picked up on cruelty allegations, but missed the PMWS, which was actually more serious.

A review of patterns of livestock & poultry production in Europe has just been published in a book called "Livestock Production and Society", which includes other relevant articles e.g. on environmental issues.

Another key new book to get a look at is "Changing European Farming Systems for a Better Future – New Visions for Rural Areas" – lots of relevant chapters comparing and analysing farming systems.

Info and detailed contents lists for both books can be accessed here: www.pighealth.com/MEDIA/P/BOOKS/MANAGEBK.HTM
