Bird flu control - ancient & modern wisdom!
Originally from: Mike
One of my veterinary colleagues in Hong Kong is engaged at present in vaccinating birds against H5N1.
What else can be done?
Well, lets look at some ancient wisdom on these matters...
Shamanism is an ancient and wise approach to healing and lifestyle which can be traced back at least 30,000 years (recorded in Palaeolithic cave drawings) and which, as a philosophy, has spread into all cultures, sciences and religions – see www.lovehealth.org/tools/shamanic.htm
At the heart of shamanism are 2 principles:
1. The universal connectedness of all things – a view re-enforced by modern physics, see www.polouk.farming.co.uk/stress/sunflower/VISIONS/connection.htm
2. Respect for nature, and a desire and intention to live in harmony with nature, recognising that we are ourselves part of nature's dynamics.
When bird, animal or even human populations get out of hand, nature gets them back into balance and harmony via amongst other things (e.g. predation or war), the natural "thinning" effect of disease epidemics.
In many parts of the world, waterfowl populations have been getting out of balance for some years now – populations too crowded, with consequent pollution (thereby lowering their disease resistance) of lakes and rivers. This is a situation just asking for a disease epidemic!
The same happens with farm animals – such as poultry – sometimes i.e. overcrowded housing or transport, with poor ventilation and/or hygiene, is just inviting a disease epidemic.
Also...
the stale air "plume" from overcrowded buildings is ideal for spreading a virus like influenza much further.
Isn't it therefore madness to think that bringing all poultry indoors will prevent an epidemic?
This week is of course the 5th Anniversary of the start of the world's worst foot-and- mouth disease (FMD) epidemic in which between 6 and 9 million animals (mostly healthy and uninfected) were slaughtered, including children's pet lambs, calves, goats and zoo animals.
Unfortunately, we humans are still not learning to live in harmony with nature – neglecting the ancient wisdom of our ancestors whose lives depended very directly on mastering that art!
Instead of harmonising with nature's actions, we add another layer of catastrophe such as, in the case of the 2001 FMD disaster, waging mindless destructive warfare against the virus, instead of regulating and caring for populations better, and boosting natural disease-resistance where possible, combined with some strategic culling or thinning of populations.
