Hi

One of the farmers had a young milking cow drop dead (in the milking parlour).

He did all that was requested and started off by picking up the phone. That good old fashioned tried and well tested way of communicating. Time was the vital facture here (or so he believed).

I will not go into all of the details (those of you who have lost stock with know the score).

He was passed from pillow to post. He was told he needed to get the cow tested for anthrax before it could be moved. He spent a whole day on the phone getting nowhere. The cow was still where she dropped. He could not call the knacker man as the cow had not been tested.

The point of the matter is – he lost that working day due to constantly having to ring and ring different bodies to try and get this matter sorted out.

It is ironic that during fmd, had he have picked up the phone and said 'I think we might have fmd' they would have been on the farm before he had put the phone down.

Whether people are computer savvy or not – is surely not the issue in respect to the BCMS thread. If a system is fully functioning then surely people can contact them in whatever way they choose. Organisations ran on paper and phone calls long before computers. Yes, technology is wonderful (we have this message board because of it) but sometimes the 'old' way is still deemed safer by many. I write emails all day – but I still send letters when dealing with anything really important. I like to know that the person has 'hard copy' and I am most definitely not an 'old die hard'!

Please keep 'plugging away Mark'. Your 'integrity' needs 'no' questioning!
