Pat's Note:

Am I the only one wondering just how long they have known about this?

...and what's the two years all about? ...and why are other reports suggesting that there are now no goats in Scotland?

They are all lying again, as per usual.

Alarm over BSE-infected Scottish goat
09/02/2005

A Scottish goat, slaughtered in 1990, may have had bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the government has confirmed.

The news comes after the European Union in January found traces of TSEs (transmissible spongiform encephalopathies) in a French goat, which tested positive for mad-cow disease.

Mad-cow disease was first diagnosed in Britain 19 years ago.

BSE was transmitted to cattle through feed that included ground-up parts of infected animals.

The epidemic led to the slaughter of millions of animals and the human variant of BSE, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (vCJD) – caused by eating infected beef – has led to more than 130 human deaths in Britain since 1990.

In an emailed statement, chief veterinary officer Debby Reynolds said the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) would be stepping up its surveillance program for goats.

"There is a distinct possibility that the animal, if infected with BSE, was exposed to contaminated feed," she said.

The department said it might take up to two years before the findings could be concretely proven.

The food standards agency said it would not be advising against the consumption of goat meat, milk or other products in the meantime

The European commission is to test 200,000 goats in the 25 EU member states over the next six months.

There are 12 million goats in the 25-nation bloc, mostly in France, Spain and Greece.
