The mad woman........

Does this woman really think she is an expert in everything ? If she thinks some shepherds in this country are callous and bad, then what of Austalia and New Zealand ? I believe that much of the husbandry over in the Antipodes works on the principle of survival of the fittest and what is euphamistically referred to as "minimal intervention". This means that they virtually let the sheep get on with it and any with lambing or other problems either cope or die so won't be lambing next year. The sheep are gathered at certain times for routine tasks but thats it folks. Are these sheep better cared for than those in the UK. ?Another slight suggestion for this lady, don't believe everything (some would go further and say, anything,) in a Defra leaflet. They, most certainly do NOT know what they are talking about. They even still say only 6 million were killed by them in the 2001 FMD epidemic and that CJD is caused by eating meat from cattle with BSE. The first is grossly underestimated and the second has no proof whatsoever. So, M/s Greer would be well advised not to sound off on subjects that she knows knowing about. Only so much can be gathered from book learning, as we rapidly found out when we started keeping stock for the first time. Some of what is written being useful and other stuff a load of bullshit (much like the article in question ?) However, if the name of the game is to sell papers and get people talking, she's earning her money, don't you think ? Besides, we are so used to getting brickbats and blame for being cruel, greedy, dirty (you name it) that its water off a ducks back. Anyone that does know what they are talking about will not credit what she has written except for what I would like to think is a minority. I hold up my hands and say to her charges "Not guilty" but she is most certainly guilty of misrepresentation, hopefully from woeful ignorance ? Cheers, Frances
