ROSE VEAL COMPANY OFFERS MILK QUOTA SOLUTION

Dairy farmers reining back milk production because of a likely quota overshoot, are being offered the chance of turning their problem into profit.

Rosette Foods, the Government backed Rose Veal project set up to deal with a surplus of bull calves during the BSE crisis, has set up a one-off scheme under which milk producers can feed their surplus calves with surplus milk and then sell them on to specialist rose veal producers for finishing.

The scheme will run for twelve weeks from now until the end of the quota year in April at which point, says the company, participating producers should be in line for a £56-£71 a head profit.

Triple benefits, says Rosette, are not having to slaughter new-born bull calves, a much needed cash injection and an end to over-quota worries without cutting production.

Producers, however, must be Freedom Food approved to quality for the scheme.

The company estimates the cost of rearing calves over the 12–14 week period to 130kg to 145kg at £74 a head.

Rosette Foods finishers will pay £1 per live kilo (£130 – £145) leaving a margin of £56 – £71 per head.
