This is interesting, and it gives a new insight into the state of play of what has become known as "the Global Economy". What is happening in the States is also happening here and, to me, it has echoes of "the Empire " for us. Possibly, because the States do not have our history( they are, in comparison, a relatively new economy) they could not be accused of trotting off round the world to annex any country they could take over for profit. They did, of course, become the worst offender in the slave trade. Are we to assume that countries like India are being raped yet again. albeit with consent this time round ? They need the jobs, they need the money. Is it morally right ? Could it be called exploitation ? Certainly it could. Is it right that a woman sells sex to pay for her childrens food ? No, its not but if she has little choice ? She is not the one at fault. Moving away from the obvious moral implications of this whole business, has anyone had to deal with someone on the other end of a so-called "help line " from India (or elsewhere) ? Setting aside their skills, there is a language barrier, local accents to contend ,with just for starters . Good communication, or lack of it, can make all the difference between whether you are "helped " or merely frustrated . Money, money makes the world go around . Money seems to drive the American dream. If they have hatched up a way to get a service for themselves cheaper thats what they will do. It does leave a nasty taste in the mouth, though. All exploitation does. Frances
