RE: Asian pigs which don''''''''''''''''t fly

There were very strict regulations in respect of the import of domestic pets to prevent rabies. This enjoyed the respect and assistance of everyone. Many times, to my certain knowledge, suspected breaches of regulations on cargo vessels were reported to the authorities by ordinary dock workers. It was considered honourable conduct to report such matters even by such tightly knit groups normally regarded as a bit unco-operative with officialdom.
The regulations have now changed, by Maff-Defra, of course, with the approval and encouragement of the Veterinary industry.
I lack the scientific knowledge to know whether this was wise or not – and like most of the population have to trust the experts
It was not HMC&E or commerce that changed or lobbied for change.
The import and export of live animals is the responsibility of Britain's vets. They suggest what should and should not be allowed. They are the experts: judge, jury and executioner. Importers might like to import a certain species from a certain place, but they can do nothing without the approval in both principle and detail by the vets.
The SVS attempts to blame illusionary illegal infected meat imports for the spate of animal diseases should be seen for what they are...downright lies and disinformation designed to protect the veterinary industry. The vets in government employ have exercised their discretion to produce the most appalling series of blunders.
They have no evidence whatsoever that imported meat, illegal or otherwise, was responsible for anything. Every attempt to blame meat imports has been discredited as a fabrication. Most attempts were pathetic.

Originally from the very beginning of the FMD outbreak they were reluctant to stop even inland movements. Even recently TB in cattle has been allowed to spread from England into Scotland.
Eventually it is going to dawn on the rest of the world that the problems here arise from dishonest reckless vets encouraging unwise international live animal movements, both in and out – and even within these islands.
