RE:FMD future, some good news

Well, and there's me thinking that we already had good vaccines against FMD, and that it IS possible to differenciate between vaccinated animals and those with the disease ! How do I know this ? FMD experts have been kind enough to educate us in this respect by posting on Warmwell. It would seem that we now know too much about the subject and it will take a whole lot of sheep to be sheared to provide enough wool to pull over our eyes now. I have little doubt that vaccines can be improved and the same with dianostic tests. BUT, and it is a gigantic BUT, we, as they say, have the technology NOW to tackle FMD in a more humane, compassionate and, from some people's point of view, economic fashion. What we truly want is for what happened in 2001 never to happen again. We cannot wait 5 years for the "scientists" to tuck in their shirt-tail so it is all tidy. Look what some so called "scientists" produced with their flawed models ? Of course, we must remember that these particular individuals knew nothing (and I suspect, still are ignorant ) of FMD. I believe the study was based on a human sexually transmitted disease. By all means improve on what we have but we do not want vaccination and rapid testing sidelined for politcal purposes. This has Nothing to do with animal health or their welfare and it jolly well should have. Frances

I had this discussion on LAWS (Labour Animal Welfare Society) I was laughed at when I wrote that we were able to tell the difference between vaccinated meat and none vaccinated meat.
I sent them to the relevant pages on Warmwell, even Bryn helped me out. Still disbelief – and why? Because I along with the help of others had more knowledge then they did. So they chose to ignore the TRUTH – believing the Government spin. This is the problem even when presented to people in BLACK and WHITE, it is not the truth unless it has the Government seal of approval stamped all over it.

Sure progress is great – but not at the cost of by passing what we already have, and are not allowed to use. No one tells parents not to use any available vaccinations because a better one will be along in five years. This is pure and simply a 'run around' at our expense, not forgetting the animals also

It is a disgrace when other Countries most of them less advanced then us can and do offer better health care to their animals. Perhaps the drugs they use were developed here – but at least they are using them. Oh to be given that choice.

You can just hear it can't you. "What a pity this outbreak happened now and not 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 years down the line. We have invested millions in a vaccine and test that would have prevented this" – and on it goes.

We already do have good vaccines, pen-side testing, etc, etc, but they could be a whole lot better!

For all the kindness of FMD 'experts' and Mary's hard work by including info on Warmwell, not to mention my own humble efforts at Farmtalking, at times I feel we all might as well not bother.

I constantly try to keep my 'cool' and am frequently bombarded with insults. Much of the info I post appears at best to be ignored, or is belittled and riduculed. I'm just about sick if it all today.

Very few of us, including myself, are scientific 'experts' and there are many times when I and no doubt others, do not fully understand the things we read.

When I don't, I ask questions of those who do and try to learn and understand. If I have misunderstood I also try to apologise and correct my mistakes. In this way I have endeavoured to maintain the credibility of Farmtalking.

With the greatest respect I would ask that members of this board ensure they are fully aware of all the existing facts re vaccines, testing and the reasons why what exists at present has not been used.

Much of the info is on Warmwell, Farmtalking and elsewhere. All I ask is that you check it out before throwing insulting remarks at myself and others who make accurate comments. If we miss something that you are aware of, a polite note to draw our attention to it, with a link where possible would be helpful and much appreciated.

Furthermore, the fact that leading veterinary scientists in four different 'developed' countries are willing to work together to share info and find the answers and their Governments Fund them to do so, is uncommon, very commendable and surely something to be celebrated.

In my opinion it's high time we followed their example.

The manner in which we continue to find fault and fail to pull together is heartbreaking.

I simply do not understand what you write Jane. Are we then not meant to ask and question anything?
You wrote you 'trust no one' in reply to Joyce last week. So why are we not allowed to voice and ask questions even from the 'so called experts'. Did experts not get us into this mess in the first place.
Not just on Science issues – but many an expert has been found to be wrong, and proved so by people asking questions.

Why has the credibility of Farmtaking been jeopardised, is it not better to have people taking an interest then posting to an empty board. At least it shows people are reading the messages.

So are you suggesting or telling us that unless we are 100% sure of what we are writing then we might as well not bother to post. So how do we learn and ask questions Jane, if we are meant to know and understand it all before we post? Seems to defeat the object of the board to me.

My apologies Coleen! –

I've certainly tried to answer your questions in the posts I've made since starting this thread and in fact the answers are included in my original post, the Press release.

I never said members were not to ask questions or be 100% right before they do, nor did I say or imply, that Farmtalking's credibility had been jeopadised.

I was trying to illusrate the fact that it is best to make sure we are aware of the facts already published before we make a somewhat careless post and if we do, it's best to correct it to 'maintain' our credibility!

Just because 'experts' as you say, 'got us into this mess' does it mean we are going to ignore all 'experts' in future? Surely not! If we do, we'll be the one's 'up the creek without a paddle'!

I thought we all appreciated Dr. Kitching's reputation and were also familiar with the work of others in Plum Island in the US as well as information received from Pirbright.

Perhaps our knowledge of the work of Dr. Jeggo in Australia is a little limited at present but it may be of some help to hear him speaking to new graduates, if you have a media player (Real or Quick Time) and if not, what he said can be read too. Just copy and paste the link below –

Best wishes – Jane
