"Because this meant that, in applying for certain funds from Brussels, the Treasury would end up paying for most of them itself, the British government decided that, having won her rebate, Britain should take maximum advantage from
it. Therefore, wherever possible, the UK would refuse to apply for such funds,
even though other member states were doing so. This further meant that other
countries were able to draw on considerably more money for their farmers from
Brussels than was available to British farmers, whose ability to match the prices of their EEC competitors was thus reduced".

"By 2003, this would have become a significant contributory factor in the collapse of British agriculture. Thatcher's 'victory' turned out to be a very
mixed blessing".

Richard – Don't I know it!!!

I think UK farmers were denied £600m – £900m a year in denied Monetary Compensation alone.

The upshot is that UK taxpayers are forced to pay other EU farmers (especially the French and the Irish) to produce food that they cannot consume, resulting in the UK buying it much of it back. Meanwhile UK farmers are forced out of business because they do not receive the same level of funding.

– As well as sending more money to export French surpluses out of the EU!.

Yet again I have added another 250,000 litres of milk quota to my business to compensate for the lowest milk price in the EU. An amount which the average EU farmers derives a living from!

No wonder we cannot afford doctors, nurses, teachers, policemen etc!
