Emergency vaccination silly?

Bill,

there are absolutely no plans for prophylactic vacccination across Europe, we are only talking about emergency vaccination, ie during an outbreak, which doesn't strike me as 'silly' at all, nor the French who were, in Mme Chmitelin's words, only two further outbreaks away from vaccinating (in 2001). You won't need me to give you the list of recent effective usage of vaccination to stop an epidemic.

I appreciate that there is always going to have to be an epidemiologically -based decision as to how to manage the interface between known infected , possibly infected and hoped-for healthy stock – but this is where the NSP test comes in , to determine retrospectively which herds/flocks were infected and which only have antibody to the vaccine. I believe that the prevalent opinion from the experts is that vaccination should begin simultaneously at the outside of the ring working in, and from the centre working out. There is an obvious risk of the vaccination crews spreading virus if they are too late getting there and subclinical infection is incubating (stock presenting clinical symptoms would not be vaccinated but culled); however, qood quality bio-security portals installed at the farm entrance /exit, entailing change of clothes, shower/shampoo and painless nasal lavage should reduce the risk drastically. Do we have these portals? Not as far as I know, but we should have, and I will keep pressing for them.

Next month DEFRA should host its FMD Stakeholder Innovation Monitoring day. Please shout for any suggestions to take, or contact me or DEFRA direct with anything you think should be there. P(l)easant persistence prevents p***-poor performance!
 Regards,
 Chris.

The French, Chris, are so much better at controlling FMD (they have never had a major epidemic) because they know how to handle contagious virus and DEFRA/Pirbright clearly do not.

It is a total waste of time wearing overalls and leaving the hair/head/neck exposed.

According to DEFRA a person who gets doused in bodily fluids from an FMD infected animal and breaks out in vesicles on the hands, arms, face and chest, DOES NOT HAVE FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE. They have "HAND-FOOT-AND-MOUTH-DISEASE", CAUSED BY THE COXSACKIE VIRUS.

Only trouble is the coxsackie virus is exclusive to man and cannot be carried by animals. Despite this inconvenient fact the DEFRA storyline is still almost universally believed by a gullible British public and so-called scientists.

It's like pissing into the wind, Chris. They spout a load of crap about lessons learned and they haven't learned a bloody thing. Swarms of people running around the country vaccinating will only spread the disease.

You talk of bio-security and entry portals, washing and shampooing, NASAL SWABS???? If the virus is in the nose then the person IS INFECTED, and will TRANSMIT THAT INFECTION FOR ANYTHING UP TO 12 WEEKS!!!!

My original reply seems to have gone missing, Chris.

Vaccinating during an epidemic is "silly" because the vaccinators would spread the disease. It's like banging my head against a wall but there is still not the slightest degree of understanding within DEFRA/IAH as to the contagious nature of FMD.

The French don't have epidemics because they understand these things but the British think it's O.K. to wear overalls and leave the hair, head and neck exposed. FMD is the most contagious disease on the planet and having a SHAMPOO or NASAL SWAB after the event is TOO BLOODY LATE!!!

Why are DEFRA believed when they say that people who get doused in bodily fluids from an infected animal get "HAND FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE"

Hand Foot and Mouth is caused by the coxsackie virus which you can't catch from animals because it is exclusive to mankind. Nobody ever picked up on this one.

THE REASON ALL THE INFECTED HUMANS TESTED NEGATIVE IS BECAUSE THE TESTS DON'T WORK.

IF YOU REMEMBER CORRECTLY MOST OF THE INFECTED ANIMALS TESTED NEGATIVE AS WELL.
