DARMSTADT, Germany — Six children living in an officer housing area of Darmstadt have been diagnosed with foot-and-mouth disease, the virus that rocked the livestock industry and the British countryside two years ago http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=16870

Many thanks for that posting Brent.
The principle cause of FMD spread in 2001 was by humans as biological carriers, a fact that has been consistantly denied by DEFRA..
The item you have posted mentions the mild symptoms in humans, which is the big problem. Often the symptoms are so mild the disease passes as the common cold and affected humans can pass the disease un-noticed to other humans and animals for several weeks.
Again, many thanks Brent. Perhaps those numbskulls at DEFRA will sit up and listen now.
All the best,
Bill.

Bill,
as part of my work on DEFRA's FMD Stakeholder Communications Group I keep pressing for the sort of bio-secure entry/exit portals for farms in the event of an FMD outbreak that Drs Sutmoller and Barteling were stating as essential if a non-vaccination policy is to be followed – like the entry/exit portals for mobile laboratories.
I also keep asking after developments in the search for a painless and effective nasal lavage, but have consistently drawn blanks so far. Perhaps this event will re-emphasise the point.
Chris.
