Sic Humor:UK MOD sends 80-yr-old Vet Call-up Papers

And the FBI were instrumental in a 72 year old British pensioner with hypertension being incarcerated in a South African prison for 2 weeks as a result of just about the most improbable case of mistaken identity you could possibly conceive of.
FBI is now subject to some fairly lethal conjecture as to what exactly that acronym stands for and is proof – if such were needed – that incompetent people are to be found the world over.

Dear Susan: Why you've come down on me is questionable. If you don't like what I post..then come on to me privately.
Your government is generally regarded by the World Public as imbeciles....and you people don't have the guts to stand up for your own rights.
I've been nothing more than an observer. So , don't criticize me for my observations. That really hacks me off. And furthermore, you want to criticize me for your own DEFRA politiks?
Well, go fly your kite in the wind. I didn't see you contibuting to this website or any others and you, obviously wanted to play games by hiding your own identity.
I've never done that...nor will I ever do that.]

Dear Susan: You were one of the first people to provide us all information about your situation in the U.K two years ago. We've traded private e-mails, as well.
Why are you coming down on me, now?
I don't understand.
If any one outsider has tried to help you folks, it's been me.
And now, you criticize me for posting up something I had nothing to do with.
It's your government that's nuts. Not me.

Steady on there Gary!
I'm sure Susan meant no offense by her posting and what is more we all know only too well that mistakes are made by us all, whether by accident or design, from time to time.
Some of those mistakes, as with those mentioned on both sides of 'the pond' can cause serious consequences for others and at the present time there are many of us who consider that some members of the UK and US Govt have recently made and seem likely to make, serious mistakes in the near future.
There is no harm in anyone joining this message board under a pseudonym and I for one, was amused by the name Susan chose although it was some time before I realised it was her! It was and is, very nice to have her back after no doubt a very busy summer!
Her contributions and yours, are always welcome and much valued but please keep them polite!
Best wishes – Jane

Thank you Jane – my feeings exactly (though more articulately put by you :-)), though whilst I meant no offence to Gary personally I was trying perhaps to point out that his constant rubbishing of the British people can grate a little at times, particularly as I am not aware of him having spent any time here. On a more domestic level we might think some of our closest family members are the pits, but woe betide anyone else who tells us that!! Or, put another way, "it might be a rotten, horrible country but it's MY rotten, horrible country"

I think I explained the reasons behind my pseudonym at the time I was "rumbled" by Joyce and there is no sinister reason behind my re-joining the group as myself: when I tried to log in as Margot the sytem didn't seem to want to accept my password no matter how often I tried – these glitches happen from to time and it really didn't seem to be a big deal to me who I posted as – my posts would be equally inconsequential :-)
As a small point following on from Gary's comment of:
"furthermore, you want to criticize me for your own DEFRA politiks"
I happened to come across my notes on the Elm Farm Conference in London in June 2001 and read what Magnus Linklater, one of the most reliably "onside" commentators throughout the whole FMD fiasco, had to say about a possible reason for the kneejerk response taken by our government:
"Perhaps the policy adopted was one rather more forced on us as a result of suggestions from the US that a very tough line would be taken if FMD broke out in Europe"
Occasionally it helps to view the larger picture, as well as
1. Remember that acts of incompetence/chicanery call it what you will by governments throughout the world should not be translated down to villifying everyone within that country: as deeply distressing as FMD was to those directly involved (and some of us helpless onlookers) it barely registered with the vast majority of decent, honest people just trying to get on with the business of living – and the attendant problems they might face too – and they should not be pilloried because of that.
2. More situations are resolved by building bridges than by constantly knocking them down with negative criticism.

All things are relative. When you get comments like this hurled at you on Guardian (where the anonimity of a pseudonym is advised, but does give rise to a certain false bravado too) by a barmpot with the dubiously ironic user name of 'Loyalbrit' merely for having the temerity to suggest that whilst the CAP might be iniquitous it does not mean that all farmers are evil:
"MargotMetroland> Feel free to renounce your evil sins and argue against all agricultural subsidies, until that time consider that the decent world will see you as the evil you are"
You tend to get inured against anything which might be levelled at you in the peaceful surroundings of 'Farmtalking' :-)

Dear Susan: I am a product of English/German genetics.
My family lost many sons in protecting your country in WWII and the ramifications for those families still affects their sons and daughters.
I happen to be about a "third Generation" American...a product of Europe. So don't come down on me. I have to deal with what's been dealt my hand. If you don't like it....then quit dealing your stacked deck.and deal with your realities.
Two years of participation with you folks has made ABSOLUTELY CLEAR...that your DEFRA/MAFF IS CORRUPT. LIARS. SO IS ELLIOTT MORLEY AND SO IS MARGARET BECKETT..
I WILL NOT RETRACT THAT...AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME DO A RETRACTION.
Those people have obviously cost you money..but they supported the likes of KING and the Ferguson, Donnelly scenario with SCUDAMORE's blessings.
Sorry, I had nothing to do with that.
Nor did I have anything to do with MOD's interventions or BLAIR's Blatant reasonings and justifications.
If you don't like what I say....so be it. Sorry, you lost money.
So did I by merely being a participant. Big Deal.
I gave my time up....hours and hours to help you people....so what.
You don't have the right to trash my efforts Ms. Susan Staunton.
And that's a Matter of FACT.
