A friend has just sent me the following message which is interesting!

"First email today confirmed that 42%of carcases tested by S.K.V. in holland proved positive to chlorenphenicol which if consumed by humans will give immunity if they devolpe problems -why are we allowing imports of food from unsafe sources?

Have also got defra figures on consumption and production of beef in uk- We will require 928,000 tonnes of boned beef products for 2002 estimated home production is 585,000 leaving 343,000 tonnes needing to be imported from sources with no tracilbilty or production certification."

That's food for thought – isn't it!

Hi Jane, saw your comment on imported meat. The most recent reply (15/2/02) to a PQ from Brinkhorst, Dutch Ag. Minister about meat from Argentina is points out the following.

1. The EU decided to allow imports of Argentinian boneless meat (from over 40.000 animals) from several regions, providing it has pH lower than 6.0 and has not been vaccinated during the last 30 days. This apparently concerns “a highly sought after and much valued Hilton Beef”).
