Hi,

This is excellent news provided we do not impose a ban ahead of our competitors, provided all the other EU countries enforce the ban at the same time and provided we ban imports (or impose a big levy) from countries outside the EU that continue to use cages. My feeling is we will adhere to the ban here and our supermarkets will import battery eggs from the cheapest source in the world.

With the smell associated with neat chicken manure from batteries it would obviously help the environment here if our Government could get rid of egg producers in the same way that they are getting rid of pig, beef, lamb and milk producers!

I seem to remember vaccination was 'considered' last time...on more than one occasion!
Having watched some of the debate on the Animal Death Bill I am truly shocked by what passes as democracy in the UK parliament.
A handful of MP's in the house listening and taking part in the debate....how many are going to consider themselves 'qualified' to vote?
To my naive mind only those actually present should be voting on this issue, so folks if you see more than 20 [and that's a gross exaggeration] have voted on the AHB you'll know what a LIE democracy in the UK really is. Joyce

That was not what the news item said. They quoted Beckett saying ' vaccination would only be used if culling did not work'. Also that local incinerators would be used. What? local incinerators.

Beckett doesn't know her aphthovirus from her elbow. FMD matters are being dealt with by Lord Whitty and Elliot Morley. They are only just awakening to the realisation that Pirbright have been leading them up the garden path for the past nearly two years.

Don't expect any meaningful contingency plan for a while yet but if there is a confirmed outbreak in the meantime I wouldn't be surprised if the tactics are somewhat different from last year. (less people running around spreading it for a start).

Bill.
