A sheep auction threatened with cancellation because of foot-and-mouth is to go ahead but with the sheep appearing on video only.

The Border Leicester Sheep Society Fair in Lanark on Wednesday will take place with farmers from across the UK watching more than 70 sheep from the comfort of a local hotel.

Concerns over the movement of livestock in the wake of the foot-and-mouth crisis meant the traditional outdoor market in Lanarkshire, which was established more than a century ago, faced cancellation.

However, after the organisers secured sponsorship from the Bank of Scotland they were able to set up the video alternative.

Around 100 farmers are expected to arrive at the Cartland Bridge Hotel in Lanark for the sale tomorrow afternoon.

As well as being able to view the sheep for sale on the video screen, they will be given additional information on their history to allow them to buy stock.

Nesta Todd, Secretary of the Society of Border Leicester Sheep Breeders, said: "It has been a tough time for the farming industry recently and we nearly had to cancel this highly regarded sale.

"We wanted to do all we could to support the industry by helping farmers buy and sell their stock and looked at several alternatives before deciding to film the stock and arrange a video sale."
