Another case of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in Northumberland, bringing the total in the region to eight.

Agriculture officials say that two more cases are suspected.

The previous seven cases seven cases were in a 400-square-mile region near Hexham which had been virus-free for months.

Animal movement restrictions had been due to be lifted within weeks.

Instead, tighter "Blue Box" restrictions have been imposed, while footpaths in the area have been closed.

New restrictions include the withdrawal of all licences for animal movement and stringent bio-security being enforced at farms, including disinfectant footbaths and sprays.

Police and for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs officials will also patrol to ensure that no animals are being moved illegally and that cleansing and bio-security measures are being used.

The new outbreak brings the total number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease to 1,978.

An investigation is continuing into how many other farms could be facing pre-emptive culls.

National Sheep Association chairman David Smith, who farms land within the area hit by the latest outbreak, said: "Everybody is aware that the infection is still out there, and yet it seems to have caught us out once again ... We wonder how far the disease has spread."
