Subject: Setback as new foot-and-mouth case revealed – Ananova Alerting Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 11:20:59 GMT
A new case of foot-and-mouth in Northumberland has occurred in a valley which has previously escaped the disease.
The case at Taylor Burn Farm, Nine Banks, near Hexham, is the first in the county for 14 weeks.
The farmer contacted officials after seeing signs of the disease in his cattle.
More than 60 cattle and 200 sheep have been slaughtered.
Animals on five neighbouring properties will be slaughtered within the next 36 hours, a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesman said.
A three-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone have been established around the farm.
Divisional veterinary manager Arthur Griffiths said: "It is a serious setback and will delay the eventual freeing of Northumberland from all restrictions by several weeks."
There are more than 60 premises within three kilometres of the infected farm which will be closely monitored.
It is believed the farmer noticed the outbreak quickly.

FIVE MORE FARMS TO BE CULLED WITHIN 36 HOURS – HOW MANY MORE ANIMALS WILL THAT BE? WHY KILL THESE ANIMALS WHEN THEY KNOW THAT THE SLAUGHTER POLICY IS NOT WORKING?!

Hello.
Unfortunate that this is.Too say the least.
Could this be an opportunity to see if ring vaccination works?
I know we will all be cynical and say that in doing so,DEFRA will only run around spreading the disease, but, they are running around anyway clearing out all the contigeous/just in case etc.farms there now anyway. Sorry. Forgot. DEFRA / NFU have not heard of vaccination.
I`ll go back to sleep. Write one hundred lines "Must not mention Vaccination". Roger Ledger
