A MAN who died from an infection is believed to have been killed by the rare anthrax bug.

The victim, who lived in the Scottish borders, worked with materials such as untreated hides.

The 50-year-old died in July after a short illness.

After a series of tests at laboratories in England, experts identified anthrax as the most likely cause of death.

Anthrax is an acute infectious disease that commonly occurs in wild animals such as cattle, sheep and goats but can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals.

Health Protection Scotland said it is not passed from person to person.

NHS Borders said the man's home in Hawick had been sealed off and an incident control team set up.

His relatives and other individuals known to have access to the building have been traced.
