A review of patterns of livestock & poultry production in Europe has just been published in a book called "Livestock Production and Society", which includes other relevant articles e.g. on environmental issues.

Another key new book to get a look at is "Changing European Farming Systems for a Better Future – New Visions for Rural Areas" – lots of relevant chapters comparing and analysing farming systems.
