Although this method of raising pigs is so normal that it hardly draws comment.
If you want the dirt on pigs and Scotland. – Google for Scotpigs – a massive operation. They actually had a PMWS epidemic, and went bust as a result.
The receiver then shipped the pigs south to England for slaughter. They were considered unsafe for human consumption in Scotland and were banned from slaughter there. The final destination of the meat is unknown.
The press picked up on cruelty allegations, but missed the PMWS, which was actually more serious.
