UPDATE August 10, 2005
Associated Press quote the official China Daily newspaper as saying that disease-infected pork which left one man critically ill was later sold at a local market by his wife, but authorities have been unable to track down customers who bought the meat.
A man from Guangdong province contracted the pig-borne illness, streptococcus suis, through a wound in his hand while butchering pigs last Thursday.
He became sick and was admitted to hospital Friday and was in critical condition late Tuesday, the paper said. The meat from the pigs he slaughtered was sold at a local market by his wife and investigators have not yet been able to find the buyers, it said. The man's wife and two daughters have not contracted the disease.
Xinhua News Agency say that over 29,000 kilograms of infected pork has been seized and the sales licenses of 532 meat vendors revoked in Sichuan since the start of the outbreak.
