Defra consults on EU foot and mouth disease legislation
Defra is consulting on legislation to implement the EU Foot and Mouth Disease Directive.
The Directive ensures a consistent approach to tackling the disease across Europe. It takes account of the latest scientific and technical developments, and of the UK's experience in eradicating the disease during the 2001 outbreak.
The UK Government is legally obliged to implement the Directive. The consultation sets out areas where the UK has national discretion and this is where Defra is inviting the views of stakeholders.
The consultation covers England only and will close on 1 September 2005. Ot her parts of the UK will consult separately.
In addition to the consultation, Defra is arranging a series of meetings with key organisations during June and July.
