Originally from memory I believe the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 applies specifically to those animals used in scientific procedures (ie experiments). If there were any cruelty involved it would be the 1911 act which would apply. I am not familiar with the law governing what should/shouldn't happen in abbatoirs.

Hi Jane

Apparently it was an animal feed abattoir and the dog was a Border Collie. The person seems very consistent and sound, it what they write.

As this has been carried out already I guess there is little that can be done (if there ever was).

The person concerned has been advised to contact the local RSPCA (who else is there) and EH to see what their view is.

I find it sad... but there is no accounting for people and their actions.

As you know, most pet animals are usually destroyed by lethal injection or
shot.
As far as I know, it is only veterinary surgeons and the trained RSPCA
Inspectors, who are allowed to obtain and administer the drug. They and
some others, such as huntsmen, are also licensed to use humane killers as
are certain people in abbatoirs, etc..
However, anyone can kill a dog, or any animal for that matter, but....
If in their right mind, they're prevented from doing so because of the
law! –
ie: United Kingdom Protection of Animals Act 1911 and it's amendments.
The story that came to your notice seems unusual but may well be true and
my guess is that the dog was shot.
If the person who reported the matter to the forum decided cruelty was
involved they could take the appropriate action, then the case would
become a matter for the Courts to decide.

(although no mention of abattoirs – for the killing of dogs) it does not
seem to make it illegal for a 'layman' to carry this out... but in an
abattoir?
Does anyone know what the actual 'law' on this is?
Taking the 'inhumane' aspect aside – what about the 'health' issue – in
respect of the food chain. Could an abattoir get away with this? I have
no way of knowing how true this story is.... but could it of happened.
