On a dog message board it was stated that someone had taken their dog into a abattoir – and the abattoir had (method not given) destroyed the dog.

Originally from the replies to this thread it seems to suggest that this is not illegal... Reading the Code of Practice for the Humane Killing of Animals under Schedule 1 to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/docs/hc193.html
(although no mention of abattoirs – for the killing of dogs) it does not seem to make it illegal for a 'layman' to carry this out... but in an abattoir?

Does anyone know what the actual 'law' on this is?

Taking the 'inhumane' aspect aside – what about the 'health' issue – in respect of the food chain. Could an abattoir get away with this? I have no way of knowing how true this story is.... but could it of happened.
