http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2004/040513c.htm
Defra, in conjunction with both the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government, has today begun sending three advisory notes to livestock farmers in Great Britain covering Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). The leaflets advise farmers on the signs and clinical signs of BSE in cattle, scrapie in sheep and goats and other Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, principally Chronic Wasting Disease in deer. The deer leaflet is being issued for the first time and precedes the instigation of an active surveillance programme for the small farmed deer population in GB.
The BSE and scrapie leaflets were last issued in 2000 and 1999 respectively and have been updated to reflect a number of key developments. These include:* the implementation of the TSE Regulations in 2002 – which amalgamated existing TSE legislation, including the ban on the feeding of processed animal proteins to ruminant animals.* the introduction of 'active' surveillance for both BSE and scrapie. * the introduction of the National Scrapie Plan and the Welsh Ewe Genotyping Scheme (WEGS II) and preparations for the Scrapie Monitoring Scheme. Notes for editors1. Further copies of the leaflets are available from Defra Publications, Admail 6000, London SW1A 2XX by telephoning 08459 556000 (e-mail: ...). 2. Leaflets in the Welsh language can be obtained direct from the Welsh Assembly (Telephone: 02920 823880)3. The leaflets can also be viewed on the Defra, SEERAD and Welsh Assembly websites at:
