A long-time supporter of Farmtalking has kindly forwarded to me this letter, received from the MEP Nirj Deva Conservative MEP for the South-East of England and Spokesman for Overseas Development and Co-operation.
"Thank you for your letter regarding the transportation of horses and donkeys to the EU for slaughter. For nearly 70 years we have prevented the live export of horses and donkeys from the UK by way of the 'minimum values' legislation but under current EU proposal this legislation is set to fall.
I have been in contact with our Conservative Agriculture Spokesman, Neil Parish, who has been working very closely with the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) on this issue. He has tabled an amendment to the EU proposal that would allow the UK an 'opt out' to ban the export of horses and donkeys intended for slaughter.
The opt out has gained support from the European Parliament's Agricultural Committee and from Commission officials but there has still been little support from our Government. The opt out is to be voted on in the European Parliament on 31st March.
There has been a huge reaction to the proposed legislation at home and Conservative MEPs have joined with the Western Morning News and the ILPH in presenting 150,000 signatures of protest to the European Parliament to show the measure of feeling in the UK.
We are determined to increase the pressure on the Government to seek an opt out. My colleagues and I fully oppose the possible resumption of the export trade of live horses for slaughter and we shall continue to fight for the banning of this practice. I am glad that you are following the campaign to stop the export of horses for slaughter and I trust that you will be joining our efforts.
Best wishes,
Nirj Deva MEP
