Can anyone hazard a guess as to why there is this mind-set against vaccination in animals, farm animals that is , this does not apply to domestic pets. Apparently it is alright to vaccinate these against numerous diseases but not farm stock. If it was O.K. to originally bring Brucellosis under control to the point that we could claim to be Brucellosis free in the 80's, why, considering the improvements made in the current vaccines available, is it absolutely unthinkable now ? I really, truly do not understand that at all. It makes no sense whatsoever. I wonder, purely on a cost analysis, what the breakdown would be for a herd such as that recently slaughtered out in Cornwall,
a. Of slaughtering, followed by disposal, and compensation paid, vets tied up for weeks, not days.
b. Vaccinating with vaccine RB 51, including contact herds ? I would like to know, who makes these decisions, how they are justified, does anyone know precisely whose feet we can lay the blame at ? I have not mentioned the stress and emotional devastation that killing a farmers stock has upon him and his family to whom life will never be the same again.Consistancy is not a trait that Defra can be accused of. As I say, if it was alright to vaccinate in years gone by, why not today with the improved vaccine ? So many questions, but so few answers. Frances
