Hi All,

Just for the hell of it and to be consistent I have search for information about Farringford Farm. There appears to have been more publicity about this farm than the one in Bucks and I can find no connection to the administration of the pig industry.

Farms: yet another crisis

Special report: foot and mouth disease

The plight of the affected farmers was illustrated by Rachael Fidler, whose husband runs Faringford farm at Freshwater Bay. She was at work when the restrictions were imposed and cannot go home to her husband and two children. "It is devastating," she said. "I could go to the farm but it would mean I would not be able to leave, so I am currently having to stay with neighbours."

FARMING IN CRISIS

The exclusion zone has been placed around Faringford Farm near Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight.

Joint owner Andrew Fidler said: "So far there have been no confirmed cases of the disease here. The vets have been here looking at the animals, checking them out for the last couple of days."

He added: "We sent a load of pigs to this abattoir in Essex along with another farm on Friday. They were kept over the weekend and slaughtered on Monday when it was discovered that they were infected with this thing."

PAPER G

Purpose: For Decision

EXECUTIVE – 30 OCTOBER 2001

PETITION TO HOLD A PUBLIC INQUIRY INTO FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

PORTFOLIO HOLDER – PUBLIC, ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION & WASTE

SUMMARY/PURPOSE

To consider a request from the National Farmers Union to support a petition calling for a Public Enquiry into the handling of the Foot and Mouth outbreak this year.

BACKGROUND

The first case of Foot and Mouth was discovered at an abattoir in Essex in February 2001. It was thought that the disease had been introduced to the abattoir by infected animals being delivered a few days previously. A number of farms who had sent animals were therefore suspect and amongst these was Farringford Farm at Freshwater.

In consequence this farm was put under Form A restrictions and the area was isolated. Several footpaths were closed by the Trading Standards Service.
