I have long thought that if this government is really serious about stock traceability, that the road it should go down is electronic tags. It is now quite widely used on pets ,all our dogs are tagged. It does apparently have its drawbacks, what system doesn't ? We (in this country, at least ) do not eat our dogs but we do eat lamb, beef pork etc (O.K. unless you are vegetarian ). Presumably we are not advised to be also consuming numerous chips (of the silicon type )! Also, some say that the chip can migrate from its original site and be hard to detect. How often this happens is not clear and how much of a problem this would be either. Cost is the biggest drawback, but usually with increased uptake both tags and associated equipment would become much cheaper. This is an area where Defra could legitimately give assistance, surely, if there is any money left in the kitty that is. They are dragging their collective feet so much on the now infamous "fallen stock scheme", that one wonders................. Frances
