Foot and mouth disease in Israel

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IN ISRAEL

(Date of previous outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Israel reported to the OIE: September 1999).

Emergency report

Information received on 20 January 2004 from Dr Oded Nir, Director of Veterinary and Animal Health Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Beit-Dagan:

Date of the report: 20 January 2004.

A suspected outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been reported in the village of Zarzir, in Yizreel district. Thirty calves in a feedlot of 260 vaccinated steers showed typical clinical signs of FMD.

Initial laboratory testing was carried out at the Kimron Veterinary Institute, Beit-Dagan. The antigen ELISA(1) tests were positive for FMD type O. Further laboratory tests, including virus isolation and typing, are in progress.

Control measures:

The Israeli Veterinary Services have taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease:

– quarantine and movement restrictions;

– booster ring vaccination within a 10-km radius of the outbreak.

Two outbreaks of FMD have been confirmed.

Description of affected population: in both outbreaks calves in feedlot were vaccinated six months ago against FMD with a polyvalent vaccine which included virus strain type O.

Diagnosis:

A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Kimron Veterinary Institute, Beit-Dagan.

B. Diagnostic tests used: ELISA(1), virus isolation and typing.

C. Causal agent: FMD virus type O.

A. Source of agent / origin of infection: under investigation.

B. Mode of spread: animal movement.

Control measures: see report dated 20 January 2004 (above).
