For the past several months one of the villagers has been reporting 'wandering' sheep to the Police. The police came out, listen and then go and visit the farmer responsible. This has happened time and time again. The sheep still continue to come and roam and graze the village.

Personally I have no problem with it, if people choose to plant plants outside their garden boundaries and not fence them in – well that is their fault. One could also say they are planting on what is 'highways' land, and therefore not theirs. A few sheep – and I mean a few, Herdwicks to be precise, are not to my way of thinking a problem. They are not wondering the roads, and not likely to cause any accidents.

I know that the farmer is at fault and he should keep the sheep in, but in many areas and small villages in Cumbria sheep roaming are normal. A few years ago – the lack of any sheep in most of Cumbria was the 'only topic'. How things change...

The Police have now said there is nothing they can do, and any further complaints must be regarded as a civil matter.

What annoys me, is not the wandering of the sheep, but the fact that the person making all the calls to the police, neither picked up the phone or put pen to paper during fmd. When there was real need for something to be said and done, they closed their eye's and ears to it all.

I really do wonder why some people choose to live in the Countryside.
