I'm surprised the recent report didn't provoke a stream of comment.
I'm no expert on any form of slaughter, but I suspect a lot of the opposition to Halal and Kosher methods is fuelled by prejudice. In theory, in ritual slaughter, the animal's attention is held so that it feels no fear and the knife is so sharp that it feel no pain. I know this does not always happen. I also know that our own methods of slaughter a far from perfect.

I would have thought that, if we are all agreed that freedom from stress and pain is the first essential, we could work out methods of slaughter that everyone (or almost everyone) could accept.
