Whether we like our present day environment or not, it was largely brought into being by a small group of British engineers who rarely get the acknowledgment due to them, except from those who have made a special study of their work, or follow the profession they created. Most people anywhere in the developed world just take for granted their man-made surroundings, and never spare a thought for how they came to be there. In the Americas, in Africa, India, Australia, Asia and all over Europe, people still travel today on the very roads and railways, through tunnels and cuttings, over bridges and embankments, that were built so long ago by men with scant scientific knowledge to rely on, no machinery and no source of energy other than that of horses and the muscle power of labourers.

Yet within the space of no more than two generations it was just such men who turned the pastoral Britain of the early 1 800s into the largely urbanised country it has since become and opened the way for all other countries to do the same.
