I have posted a couple of times about conversations I have had with Mark Hendrick M.P., who is Margaret Becket's PPS. Hendrick's official view is that as long as there is the smallest shadow of doubt animals will be slaughtered. Human life must be protected at all costs.

Privately Hendrick will admit the Government resents paying subsidies to the farming industry. The rest of it he leaves for you to work out yourself.

Government and scientists are scratching each others backs, a very difficult arrangement to break.
