Malaysia takes cattle from Australia's competitor

A shipment of 1500 Argentinian cattle was due to have arrived in Malaysia this month.
It was reportedly the first shipment of live cattle to have been exported by Argentina outside the South American region in 25 years.
The Malaysian live cattle market, Australia's fourth largest, has been steadily growing with WA making up about 90pc of the $45 million trade.
The competitiveness of the Argentinian Peso to the US dollar had apparently made the export of live cattle to Malaysia a viable proposition, although it is still not certain if it was not just a one-off shipment.
It was reported in MLA's Livelink that the cattle had come from the Buenos Aires province which was a considerable distance from the northern province of Salta where foot and mouth disease had been reported in September.
WA Livestock Exporters Association chairman John Edwards said the Australian live export industry, through Livecorp, had put considerable effort into the Malaysian market in terms of the quality of cattle and improving feedlots.
He said it was disappointing, in view of Argentina's questionable FMD status, that the cattle could go into the same market as Australian cattle.
