As I said at the very end of my article, I think the importance of this cluster of neurodegenerative disease in Guam goes way beyond the boundaries of that tiny island.
Whilst its appalling what has happened in Guam, we have a golden opportunity to identify the true cause out there – whatever it may turn out to be. And with that knowledge, we are then able to apply it very beneficially – in respect of developing controls, cures, prevention – to the millions of other cases of Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, Motor Neurone diseases that are currently erupting at unprecedented incidence rates in every country around the world. ( also surfacing increasingly in younger people as the years go by ).
I am sure that most of us have had a case of this type of disease in a friend or family . This is the relevance of the story, I reckon. Of course, there are all of the political / sociological perspectives to this story that are disturbing and important, but I think that understanding the true cause of these diseases is the main message. DEFRA or DOH are never going to attempt to do that for us – they will just say that it ain't their job !!!
Best,
