Thanks for the links Lina!
I've posted a brief resume of each below.
To clarify this topic again – the proposed research is for a better vaccine than what is available at present that will provide long-term immunity.
Yes! – we do have a vaccine that works and is very eficacious.
In fact I and others have been saying so since very early in 2001, but it could be better and that's the reason for the collaborative research announced today!

This reference refers to a vaccine bank that at present it will hold the vaccine available now, which is the type we would be allowed to use in emergency. It does not refer to the proposed research into a better vaccine!

This reference explains FMD very well and includes info that the present vaccines only provide immunity for 6 to 12 months but again references to vaccine refer to what is available now and does not refer to the proposed research for a better vaccine that provides long term protection!

This site is also very good but again is referring to vaccines required on an annual basis nit long term immunity!

This page would seem to confirm the Press Release I posted this morning as it says,
"Scientists at Plum Island are in the process of developing a new vaccine for FMD. This new vaccine can help people to distinguish diseased animals from vaccinated ones. This is important because countries that want to maintain their FMD-free status have to be able to show this difference. With the old vaccines, it was practically impossible to distinguish between diseased animals and vaccinated animals.
Please note it says they are in the process of developing a new vaccine and does not say it is available.
As you will recall Dr. McKenna is from Plum Island and part of the team collaborating in the new research program.

This link seems to be from Plum Island with a link to 'Animal Disease Breakthrough' but sadly that link is broken. I guess it may lead to the one above.
