Plase give your Mother my very best wishes for a speedy recovery and take care yourself and please don't worry too much about not being able to update http://www.warmwell.com as frequently as normal at present. I'm sure everyone will be visiting it just as often as usual for what will be the latest as well as the so very useful archives!

I also wonder if you or anyone else managed to catch Dr. Ruth Watkins on 'Hard Talk' last night, concerning the SARS virus?

As usual, she was so easy to understand as she explained the things that are 'known' concerning virus and not afraid to admit there is a lot that is 'not known' yet!

I only hope the powers that be will listen to her and act on her recommendations more speedilty this time. They're certainly taking their time to adopt them with regard to FMD and vaccination!

I wish I could do more – but my poor mum is very ill and I am only able to

I read:
6. The powers of Scottish Ministers are governed by the Animal Health Act
1981. Since then there have been a number of developments in the science of
disease control, the identification of new and emerging disease threats and
also heightened awareness of disease risks.
Animal Health Act 2002
41. Section 19 provides that the Act extends to England and Wales only
Am I the only person who hadnt taken in that Scotland had not adopted the
2002 Act yet!!
So this consultation is IT:
27. A possible Scottish Bill to amend the Animal Health Act 1981, so far as
Scotland is concerned, and to take new related powers, is likely to include
the following:An extended power to slaughter animals for disease
control/prevention reasons
30. The intention now is to make the slaughter powers explicit, i.e.
slaughter wherever this is necessary for disease control and prevention
reasons. Put simply, if animals are at risk of infection then the wider
slaughter power would be available as part of a number of measures within
the
strategy to control quickly, and then eliminate, a serious disease. The
proposed new power could include, for example, animals that had been
vaccinated against FMD.
31. It is also thought sensible, again to address the possible risk of
animal
disease spreading rapidly, to be able to extend these wider slaughter powers
to diseases other than FMD, for instance the 14 other List A diseases (see
Annex A). For example, in the case of Classical Swine Fever, in a densely
populated pig area, pre-emptive slaughter of these animals might be
necessary
to prevent disease spreading.
And so it goes on--any help to respond or please respond yourselves if you
