FOOD security needs to be put back on the political agenda or the UK will become dangerously reliant on imported food, the government has been warned.
The Commercial Farmers Group has produced a discussion paper which argues there is a strong case for British agriculture to supply a greater proportion of the nation's food.
The paper, launched on Tuesday, 25 March in the House of Lords, claims that it is in the national interest for action to be taken to halt the decline in the UK farming sector.
Imported food poses a threat to plant and animal health and if the UK retains greater control over its food it will be less open to terrorism, it argues.
