I like the comment from the DEFRA spokesperson "It is a debate not a referendum".

Our views on everthing from sewage sludge to foot-and-mouth disease seem to be irrelevant. The only opposition the government has is from back-bench left wing Labour M.P.'s.

Somewhere along the line we have abandoned any pretext of being a democracy.
