I'm told there was a 'snippet' on TV this morning indicating that the Govt is considering introducing 'compulsory vaccination' if the slaughter policy doesn't appear to work within 48 hours in any future outbreak of FMD.
Such a measure is presumed one of the reasons they consider it necessary to introduce the amendments to Animal Health Act, thus giving them the powers to 'force' complicity.
I have to say I am appalled at such a suggestion! I consider it a gross infringement of civil liberty and our democratic freedoms. Further evidence of their dictatorial attitude and lack of respect for existing legislation, in so many respects.
It also indicates a dismal understanding of the virus and the successful methods of control available.
There is absolutely no need to order 'compulsory vaccination'. What on earth is wrong with simply giving farmers 'the choice' and making the vaccine available to them?
Those farmers that choose to vaccinate will thus protect their stock and are unlikely to worry if their neighbour prefers not to do so.
In much the same way as I don't care if a visitor's dogs are not vaccinated, because mine are!
