Hi Bill – Bruce Jobson has kindly sent me the following message which may help to clarify a few things! –

"Hi Jane,
I'll save everyone a bit of time with some info following recent discussions on Farmtalking. It's difficult for people to comprehend everything, especially those that are unfamiliar with the layout and knowledge. I've already written this testimony in "Waughtergate" and it may assist your readers. So briefly:

1) The waste-heap had rubbish, wood, paper, boxes, etc, everything, literally being dumped onto it. It was a permanently smouldering ash-heap with bones, cutlery and crockery also present. Other people also brought rubbish onto the premises for disposal.

The waste-heap had been present at Burnside "ever since I was there" according to Bobby. In the trial, Jim Dring also confirmed that the waste-heap had been present when he previously licensed the premises to owner Philip Leadbitter, prior to Philip quitting the industry, and then renting the property to the Waugh brothers.

2) A complaint about the "fire", smoke, smell etc, necessitated a visit from Jim Dring and Trading Standards in December 2000. No action was taken against Bobby, but a return visit to coincide with the annual licensing visit was arranged for the last week in January (24th).

Hope this helps.

Best wishes
Bruce

Never did go much for the swill story and the Chinese community were
outraged. The chances of the disease travelling in meat products (even if
uncooked) are remote.
The text books say so, and this is what the Report of the Committee of
Inquiry (the Northumberland Report) says,
" We have pointed out that the major risks derive from the persistence of
foot-and-mouth disease in bones, offal and lymph glands, and we think that if
a policy is adopted which excludes these dangerous components, the reduction
of risk would be almost equivalent to that which would be achieved by a
complete ban on meat imports."
By the way, what was Bobby Waugh burning on his land?
