AN improved test for bovine tuberculosis is to be trialled by the government in a bid to combat the spread of the disease.

Defra announced on Wednesday (29 May) that the gamma-interferon test will be used in pilot areas.

The test, which involves incubating a blood sample with tuberculins for a day, is believed to be more accurate than the traditional tuberculin skin test.

The trials follow the endorsement of the gamma-interferon test as a supplement for the skin test by the EU's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health earlier this month.
