Originally from the Shropshire Star today 7th Aug.

North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson today launched an astonishing attach on the Government's handling of the foot and mouth crisis, slamming agriculture ministers as " Bungling, incompetent deceitful Mr Paterson accused the Government of leaking details of foot and mouth compensation payments which have made 37 farmers millionaires. The Government was playing "dirty games in an attempt to discredit the agriculture industry. he said Now he is calling for an independent public enquiry to look at how the devastating foot and mouth virus entered the country in the first place. His comments come as the foot and mouth crisis took another twist with a report that the EU is launching a fraud enquiry into excessive compensation payments to farmers...................

But Mr. Paterson stormed " The Government let this disease into the country in the first place, so it absolutely outrageous that it should be shifting the blame onto farmers. Farmers are being vilified because of the governments incompetence in cleaning up the problem which it created. We have these outrageous situation where a poor farmer in Scotland has spent more than 30 years building up one of the best pedigree herds in the Western world and is now being attacked for getting the money which is rightfully his...........

This chap is absolutely first rate. Myself and Jackie helped to get him back in with an increased majority. His tireless support of farmers justifies all the work my fellow campaigners put in

I was also pleased to note that my talking point about Millionaire farmers posted on the group a few nights ago was so well received by you. I have had many kind messages to my home Thank you. Following on, I rejigged the message to make it more acceptable to the general public and I am please to say that the Shropshire star printed it tonight, – Copy below – I only emailed it to them at a little after midnight last evening. It must have taken their fancy, I have found the star to be very sympathetic to our cause.

To those who have asked to use my stuff elsewhere – I would be honoured if you were so to do. Send it to who you like – spread the word IT'S THAT LIAR, CHEAT, AND CHARLATAN BLAIR THAT'S ON THE FIDDLE NOT FARMERS!!!!!] Best wishes to us all John and Jackie

I note that NFU spokesperson called the announcement that some farmers are receiving millions in compensation a deliberate and leak and "farmer bashing" I am sure he's right. The way this information was announced creates a misleading impression How many other business face the prospect of having big brother muscle in and confiscate their stock? Would you not expect to receive financial recognition if your home were demolished to make way for a road? Some pedigree livestock are valued greater than a family saloon and yet recently, when a car sales and garage went bump, the official receiver came in and sold the cars and garage equipment and used the money raised to pay off the creditors. So what do farmers sell to pay off the creditors once Defera have killed their stock, without a by your leave or thank you. I know of countless farmers who would be glad to vaccinate their animals against FMD, as they already do for many other common diseases, and thereby avoid the need for the government to purchase the animals, as there would be no need to cull. But if, in the future, this shambolic set up that passes for a government continues to present wholesale destruction as the only alternative to FMD, and make it a legal requirement, then they have a legal and moral duty to buy the animals they destroy. I agree that the tax payer should not bear the brunt of the bill but it is this Administration that is calling the shots, giving farmers no alternative and I would urge all responsible taxpayers to demand that the government present our country with an alternative means to curing this disease, which is presently available in many other countries throughout the world, so that the cost to farmers and taxpayers alike is minimised John Harrison, Pig farmer Whixall
